Photoemission and LEED characterization of Ni2P(0001)

چکیده
Ion bombardment of Ni2P(0 0 0 1) produces a disordered, Ni-rich surface. For annealing temperatures above 450 K, long range ordering occurs, and the surface Ni/P ratio decreases. Annealing above 700 K produces an ordered (1 · 1) hexagonal surface with a composition near that expected for a simple stoichiometric termination of the bulk structure. Variations in photoemission spectra are observed along with the changes in composition associated with the long range ordering of the surface. UPS spectra change from Ni metal like to Ni2P like, with a corresponding decrease in the density of states at the Fermi level. The splitting between the Ni 2p3=2 main and satellite peaks increases as the Ni/P ratio increases, likely due to poorer screening of the photoemission final state as a result of the decreased density of states at the Fermi level. 2004 Elsevier B.V. Active Role of Phosphorus in the Hydrogen Evolving Activity of Nickel Phosphide (0001) Surfaces
Optimizing catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a critical step toward the efficient production of H2(g) fuel from water. It has been demonstrated experimentally that transitionmetal phosphides, specifically nickel phosphides Ni2P and Ni5P4, efficiently catalyze the HER at a small fraction of the cost of archetypal Pt-based electrocatalysts. However, the HER mechanism on nicke...
متن کاملWidely available active sites on Ni2P for electrochemical hydrogen evolution--insights from first principles calculations.
We present insights into the mechanism and the active site for hydrogen evolution on nickel phosphide (Ni2P). Ni2P was recently discovered to be a very active non-precious hydrogen evolution catalyst. Current literature attributes the activity of Ni2P to a particular site on the (0001) facet. In the present study, using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we show that several widely a...
متن کاملSurface characterization of a - Mo 2 C ( 0001 )
The (0001) surface of a-Mo2C prepared by Ar ion bombardment and annealing was characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). An ion-bombarded surface annealed to 1000 K exhibits an Mo/C ratio of 2.2, characteristic of an Mo-terminated surface. The Mo-terminated surface exhibits a complex, but predominantly ‘(1×1)’ hexagonal LEED pattern on a dif...
متن کاملEfficient Water Electrolysis Using Ni2P as a Bifunctional Catalyst: Unveiling the Oxygen Evolution Catalytic Properties of Ni2P.
The excellent bifunctional catalytic activity of nickel phosphide (Ni2P) for water splitting is reported. Ni2P, an active hydrogen evolving catalyst, is shown to be highly active for oxygen evolution. Only 290 mV of overpotential is required to generate a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH. Under oxygen evolving conditions, Ni2P undergoes structural modification to form a Ni2P/NiOx core...
متن کاملExperimental evidence for a partially dissociated water bilayer on Ru[0001].
Core-level photoelectron spectra, in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations, confirm that the stable wetting layer of water on Ru[0001] contains O-H and H2O in roughly 3:5 proportion, for OHx coverages between 0.25 and 0.7 ML, and T<170 K. Proton disorder explains why the wetting structure looks to low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to be an ordered p(square root of 3 x square root...
